Al-Siq

The Siq is a narrow, winding gorge carved by tectonic forces, its walls soaring up to two hundred feet high. This kilometer-long chasm serves as the dramatic entrance to the ancient city of Petra. Centuries ago, Nabataean engineers cut channels into the rock faces to divert flash floods and pipe fresh water to the city center. Along the path, faint traces of votive niches and remnants of colorful stucco remain, marking the path where ancient travelers finally caught their first glimpse of the Treasury.
