La Sqala

La Sqala sits behind a high, thick wall of stone topped with rounded battlements that overlook the old port of Casablanca. In the eighteenth century, Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah built this fortification to guard the northern edge of the city against sea attacks. Today, the heavy timber gates open into an interior garden protected from the coastal winds. A collection of bronze cannons still points toward the Atlantic, resting on the same stone ramparts where soldiers once stood watch for invading ships.
