The minaret of the Mosquée Ould el-Hamra rises in a sharp, square profile against the surrounding buildings of the Sidi Belyout district. This structure traces its origins to the mid nineteenth century, decades before the French Protectorate reshaped Casablanca into a sprawling metropolis. Local oral tradition holds that the mosque was commissioned by a merchant of the same name who found a hidden cache of gold while digging his foundation. He built the sanctuary to dedicate his fortune to the city.
