The Hammam Seffarine is marked by a massive, weathered cedar door set deep into a stone archway, tucked away near the copper beaters’ square. Built in the fourteenth century under the Marinid dynasty, this bathhouse has provided heat and steam to the city for over seven hundred years. Its furnace burns scrap wood from the carpentry workshops nearby, heating water that flows through a complex network of ancient pipes. A local worker once shoveled that furnace wood for fifty years without interruption.
