The granite statue of Tadeusz Kościuszko rises from a stone pedestal in the center of the square. It depicts the general holding a plan for the fortifications of West Point, a testament to his service in the American Revolutionary War. During the nineteen eighties, this spot served as a gathering place for the Orange Alternative, an underground protest movement. They organized surreal, festive happenings here, dressing as gnomes to mock the local authorities while soldiers patrolled the area nearby.
