The Pera Palace Hotel sits in the Beyoğlu district with a facade of carved stone and rounded balconies that look out over the Golden Horn. It opened in eighteen ninety-five to house passengers arriving on the Orient Express, who had no luxury accommodations in Istanbul at the time. Agatha Christie reportedly wrote Murder on the Orient Express while staying in room four hundred eleven. Today, a brass plaque marks the door, and the hotel retains its original cage elevator, forged from iron and wood.
