Cambridge Market Square

The stone fountain at the center of the square marks the spot where a weekly market has operated since the thirteenth century. King John granted the town its first charter in twelve hundred and seven, and traders have filled this space with produce and goods ever since. During the Victorian era, local fishmongers and butchers dominated the stalls, often leaving behind a layer of debris that led officials to call the market a disgrace to the town.
