The Mathematical Bridge connects two halves of Queens' College across the River Cam, recognizable by its sharp, angular timber beams. While popular legend claims Isaac Newton designed it without using a single nail, the current structure dates to nineteen oh two and relies on iron bolts. In the middle of the eighteenth century, the college commissioned William Etheridge to build the original span. His design uses tangents and radii to create structural rigidity, allowing wood to mimic the strength of stone arches.
