The Gate of Virtue sits within the college walls, marked by a stone face peering down from the center of its arch. Students pass through it on their way to the Senate House for graduation, a tradition dating back to the college's second founding in fifteen fifty-seven. Physician John Caius rebuilt the site then, insisting on the three distinct gates: the Gate of Humility, the Gate of Virtue, and the Gate of Honour. He believed architecture would guide a student's moral and intellectual life.
