The Senate House stands apart because of its pristine, white Portland stone facade and the rigid classical columns that define its front. This eighteenth-century building serves as the stage for every graduation ceremony at the University of Cambridge. In nineteen twelve, a group of students protesting the university's refusal to grant degrees to women broke into the building and shattered the windows. They demanded equal recognition, a fight that occupied the university administration for decades until they finally conceded in nineteen forty-eight.
