The entrance to Pembroke College is marked by the seventeenth century chapel designed by Christopher Wren. It was his first major commission, built as a gift from Bishop Matthew Wren to his brother, the Bishop of Ely. Before this, the college had no dedicated space for worship. The younger Wren’s design broke away from the traditional collegiate Gothic style, introducing a classical facade to the medieval street. He built it quickly, and it remains a centerpiece of the college today.
