The Round Church

religious

The Round Church, or the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, stands out for its circular nave modeled after the Rotunda of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Built around eleven thirty, it is one of only four medieval round churches remaining in England. Its shape reflects the crusading fervor of the twelfth century. In eighteen forty-one, the roof collapsed during restoration, revealing early Norman arches that had been hidden for centuries. A wooden angel from the old roof still hangs inside today.
