King's College Chapel

The stone fan vaulting overhead at King's College Chapel hangs like delicate lace, despite each individual stone weighing hundreds of pounds. Henry the Sixth laid the first stone in fourteen forty-six, but the Wars of the Roses halted construction for decades. Henry the Eighth eventually finished the structure to secure his own legacy. He installed the immense stained glass windows, which survived the English Civil War only because a local scholar convinced the soldiers that the glass was too fragile to remove.
