Peterhouse

Peterhouse is defined by a heavy, stone gatehouse that sits flush against the street, shielding the oldest college in Cambridge from the bustle of Trumpington Street. Founded in twelve eighty-four by Hugh de Balsham, the Bishop of Ely, it was established to house scholars in a monastic tradition. During the English Civil War, Parliamentary soldiers tore down the college's original stained glass windows, viewing them as symbols of excess, yet the chapel survives today as one of the few examples of thirteenth-century collegiate architecture.
