Cambridge Union

The Cambridge Union is marked by a distinctive red brick Victorian Gothic facade with pointed window arches that separate it from the neighboring stone colleges. It functions as the oldest debating society in the world, founded in eighteen fifteen to provide a space for students to discuss politics when the university administration forbade such topics. When the authorities tried to shut the society down in eighteen seventeen, the members simply relocated their meetings to a nearby pub, securing their right to speak.
