Trinity Hall wears a coat of arms featuring a crescent and stars, carved in stone above its heavy timber gate. Founded in thirteen fifty by Bishop William Bateman, the college began as a training ground for lawyers during the aftermath of the Black Death. When a plague wiped out most of the local clergy, Bateman secured the site to replenish the ranks of civil and canon lawyers. He built his college on the banks of the Cam to ensure his students remained dedicated to their books.
