Senate House Passage is a narrow, stone-paved lane framed by the towering, iron-spiked fences of Gonville and Caius College on one side and the neoclassical bulk of the Senate House on the other. It serves as the primary ceremonial approach for students heading to graduation. In nineteen seventy-three, a group of students protesting the Vietnam War climbed the Senate House roof during a degree ceremony. They showered the officials below with leaflets, bringing the dignified proceedings to a complete, shouting halt.
