Ransome's Dock

Ransome's Dock stands as a rare survivor of Victorian industrial ambition on the banks of the River Thames. While many other creeks and private docks along this stretch of the river were filled in or paved over as London modernized, this dock retains the same size and shape it held when it was first excavated and constructed in eighteen eighty-four. It was commissioned by the engineer Allen Ransome, whose company specialized in woodworking machinery, to accommodate heavy coastal steamers and barges bringing industrial materials directly into his foundry.
