Archaeologists long suspected that Londinium, the Roman precursor to London, must have had an amphitheater for public spectacles, but they could find no trace of it. That changed in nineteen eighty-eight, when construction workers preparing to build a new art gallery unexpectedly broke into two thousand-year-old stone walls.
