The Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children began in eighteen sixty-seven as a modest dispensary in two rented rooms on Virginia Road. Two Quaker sisters, Mary and Ellen Philips, established the clinic after witnessing the devastating impact of a cholera epidemic on the children of the East End. They initially operated with a focus on both women and children, but the overwhelming need for pediatric care soon led them to dedicate the facility exclusively to the health of sick children.
