St Augustine's Church is locally known as the Cathedral of North London, a title it earned through its sheer scale and architectural grandeur rather than any official status. Its founder, Reverend Richard Carr Kirkpatrick, was a staunch supporter of the Oxford Movement and sought to create a site for high-church worship that stood in defiance of the plainer religious traditions of the time. When you look at the structure today, you are seeing a masterwork by the architect John Loughborough Pearson, who purposefully blended Gothic elements from cathedrals across Europe to create this unique landmark.
