Surrey Square Park

Surrey Square Park sits on land that was once part of an ambitious late eighteenth-century residential project designed by the architect Michael Searles. Searles intended to create a grand, upmarket square here, but the development was never finished as a complete four-sided enclosure. While a beautiful row of Georgian terraced houses still stands on the square's northern side as a reminder of that original vision, the surrounding land remained largely open or was eventually filled by various structures and churches. Today, the park serves as an essential green oasis for the dense neighborhood, occupying space where once there was only the promise of a private garden square for the city's expanding population.
