Blizard Building

The Blizard Building is named after Sir William Blizard, a prominent eighteenth-century surgeon who established England's first hospital-based medical school. His legacy of combining theoretical study with clinical practice continues within this facility, which serves as a massive, high-tech hub for biomedical research. The structure was designed by the late architect Will Alsop, who aimed to create an environment that felt less like a traditional academic building and more like an experimental laboratory for ideas. Its most striking features are the large, brightly colored, curvaceous pods that appear to float inside a vast, light-filled central atrium. These pods are designed to mirror the shapes of biological cells and molecules, grounding the building in its primary purpose of scientific inquiry.
