RampART

Rampart Street in Shadwell was once the site of a radical experiment in urban living known simply as RampART. In May 2004, a collective of artists, community groups, and political activists occupied a derelict building that had previously functioned as an Islamic school for girls. They transformed the empty, neglected property into an autonomous social center that operated for five and a half years entirely on a voluntary basis. The space functioned without funding, relying on donations and the principle of mutual aid to host hundreds of screenings, performances, exhibitions, and meetings. It served as a hub for local and international activism, providing a home base for the European Creative Forum and accommodating visitors during the 2004 European Social Forum. The project eventually came to a dramatic end in October 2009, when a team of police officers, bailiffs, and a priest arrived to execute an eviction order, using chainsaws to breach the building as protesters held the roof. The site has since been redeveloped into modern residential townhouses, leaving behind the memory of the squatted social center that once defined this street.
