Waverley Bridge rests on a massive stone foundation that spans the deep ravine once filled by the Nor Loch. It supports a road deck held up by intricate iron girders, connecting the high ground of the Royal Mile to the newer developments of the city. Back in the eighteen seventies, the city replaced an earlier, narrower structure to accommodate the growing rail traffic below. The bridge functions as a roof for the sprawling station that takes its name from the bridge itself.
