St. Dominic's Catholic Church (San Francisco)

The twin towers of Saint Dominic’s Catholic Church rise above the surrounding houses in Lower Pacific Heights, topped with a distinctively heavy, rounded stone crown. This massive Gothic Revival structure replaced a wooden church that burned down in the fire following the nineteen oh six earthquake. When Father Pius Murphy decided to rebuild, he insisted on fireproof stone, importing granite from Raymond, California. Construction took nearly twenty years, and the building stands today as a survivor of the city’s most destructive era.
