CALIFORYA BEAR Mural

landmark

The mural you are looking at, locally known by its playful, phonetically spelled phrase, came to life as a direct response to the persistent tagging and graffiti that frequently covered this corner. Created by the team from the nearby One-to-Am gallery, the work was designed as a deliberate, uplifting intervention for the neighborhood. The artists wanted to offer a colorful, bright contrast to the stresses of the urban environment, particularly for the many people who walk past this spot on their way to and from the nearby courthouse. It serves as a moment of levity in a busy corridor, intentionally using vibrant colors to break up the gray monotony of the streetscape. The mural famously weathered a brief disappearance in twenty-thirteen when it was mistakenly painted over by mistake, but the community sentiment was so strong that it was promptly restored with a few minor design updates. By combining a lighthearted message with a bold aesthetic, the piece functions as a deliberate attempt to reclaim a wall that had long been a target for vandalism.
