The American Bookbinders Museum began with a singular, somewhat reclusive goal. Its founder, a professional bookbinder named Tim James, spent two decades gathering antique machinery and tools with the initial intent of retiring to California gold country to open a private workshop where he could live as a town curmudgeon. He eventually changed course, deciding that the history of these specialized tools was disappearing and needed to be shared with the public instead.
