Its name commemorates the Couch family, who once owned a significant portion of this district, including the Tremont House hotel nearby. Ira Couch, the patriarch, was a prominent hotelier who built his fortune here in the mid nineteenth century. The alley provided service access to the ornate stages and dressing rooms that define the block, functioning as the quiet, utilitarian shadow to the glitter of the theater district.
