The building at ten fourteen Dumaine Street sits behind a plain, high-walled courtyard typical of the French Quarter, but its most distinct feature is the unusual arrangement of its two-story wooden galleries. These galleries hang directly over the sidewalk, held up by slender iron columns that force pedestrians to navigate the narrow passage beneath them. Local legend credits this home to the pirate Jean Lafitte, who supposedly used the site to store smuggled goods and plan his defense of New Orleans.
