The three-story brick townhouse on Pirate's Alley holds a narrow balcony and dark green shutters that contrast against the weathered facade. In nineteen twenty-five, William Faulkner moved into the apartment on the second floor. He shared the space with the artist William Spratling and wrote his first novel, Soldiers' Pay, while living here. The rooms still contain the original fireplace and floorboards that Faulkner walked across while working. Today, the building serves as a bookstore dedicated to his life and work.
