New Orleans Pharmacy Museum

A cast iron balcony wraps around the second story of this narrow, two-story townhouse, shielding the ground floor where Louis Dufilho Junior lived and worked in the early eighteen hundreds. As America's first licensed pharmacist, Dufilho kept his apothecary shop here. Shelves inside hold hand-blown glass bottles still filled with dried herbs, vats of medicinal leeches, and porcelain jars marked with fading Latin labels. Behind the counter, he prepared tinctures for the city's yellow fever outbreaks using recipes kept under lock and key.
