French Market

The French Market sits under a long, low roof of copper and iron that stretches six blocks along the Mississippi River. This row of open-air stalls began as a Native American trading post where tribes exchanged furs and food long before settlers arrived. In eighteen twenty-two, the city replaced the wooden shelters with the sturdy brick market house that still stands today. It was once the place where New Orleans bought its produce, fish, and game, brought in by boat from the bayou.
