The Napoleon House carries a heavy, weathered yellow stucco facade that distinguishes it from the surrounding brick and ironwork. Nicholas Girod, a wealthy merchant and one-time mayor of New Orleans, built this home at the turn of the nineteenth century. He famously offered the residence to Napoleon Bonaparte as a refuge during his exile. The emperor died before he could accept the invitation, but the name stuck, and the family kept the building for decades while brewing their own gin cocktails.
