The red brick facade at five forty Saint Peter Street stands out for its lack of the ornate iron balconies common to the neighborhood. Built in the eighteen thirties, this structure once functioned as the civil courthouse for the city. During the period of the American Civil War, Union soldiers used the upper floors as a barracks. A single prisoner, a woman accused of tearing down an American flag, reportedly spent a frantic night inside while a crowd gathered in the street to demand her release.
