The three story building at seven twenty-two Toulouse Street stands out because of its intricate cast-iron balcony, which stretches across the entire front facade. Built shortly after the great fire of seventeen ninety-four, it served for decades as the residence and office of Doctor Alfred Mercier. Mercier was a prominent Creole physician who spent his evenings here translating Homer into Louisiana French. He held court in these rooms, hosting weekly literary salons for the city’s French-speaking intellectuals long after the Civil War ended.
