Cafe Du Monde

food drink

The green and white striped awning covers a wide, open-air pavilion that stays busy twenty-four hours a day. This is the original Cafe Du Monde, which has served coffee and beignets on the site of the old French Market since eighteen sixty-two. During the Civil War, the blockade of New Orleans made coffee scarce, so the proprietors began mixing it with chicory root to stretch their supply. That specific blend remains the standard for every cup poured here today.
