Central Grocery and Deli occupies a narrow storefront on Decatur Street, marked by a faded yellow sign and large, dusty windows filled with Italian imports. In nineteen oh six, a Sicilian immigrant named Salvatore Lupo opened these doors to serve the local dock workers and sailors. Lupo realized his customers wanted a lunch that was quick to eat, so he sliced a round muffuletta loaf in half, layered it with Italian meats, cheese, and a signature olive salad, creating the city's original muffuletta.
