Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar

The walls of Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop are built from soft, handmade bricks layered with oyster shells and mud. This single-story cottage sits low to the ground on Bourbon Street, its exterior dark and weathered by centuries of rain. Jean Lafitte, the privateer who allegedly used this space to fence stolen goods while posing as a blacksmith, spent his time here during the eighteen tens. The structure remains a rare example of the heavy, bousillage construction that defined early colonial building techniques in New Orleans.
