Peychaud's at The Celestine

Antoine Peychaud operated his pharmacy at this corner in the eighteen thirties. He earned his reputation by mixing medicinal bitters into brandy for his neighbors, creating a drink that eventually became the Sazerac. The shop served as a laboratory for these liquid experiments, turning a local apothecary into the birthplace of a classic cocktail. While the building now houses other businesses, the original recipe for those bright red bitters remains the primary ingredient in the oldest recorded cocktail in the United States.
