Statue of Phillips Brooks

The bronze figure of Phillips Brooks stands ten feet tall, captured mid-sermon with his right arm outstretched and his hand held high. Augustus Saint-Gaudens spent over a decade sculpting this memorial, frequently discarding his progress when the likeness failed to satisfy him. Tucked behind the preacher, a faint, hooded Christ rests a hand on his shoulder. Brooks was the rector of Trinity Church nearby and a local icon, yet this statue remains the only public monument in Boston featuring a religious figure.
