The Berkeley Building stands out for the bold, gilded terra cotta sunbursts that radiate across its grey limestone facade. Designed by Blackall, Clapp, and Whittemore in nineteen oh five, the building was created as a high-end showcase for luxury shops and offices. While its exterior glows with ornate, neoclassical detailing, the structure was built to be fireproof at a time when Boston builders were terrified of repeating the Great Fire of eighteen seventy-two. It remains a rare example of early twentieth-century opulence.
