The storefront on South Fifth Street wears a vibrant mural of a rainbow-colored bird, but the real marker is the constant stream of people carrying bags of clothes toward the loading dock. This building houses Philly AIDS Thrift, a nonprofit that funnelled over four million dollars into local HIV and AIDS organizations over the last two decades. It started in two thousand five with three friends selling donated goods in a tiny space, eventually expanding to fill this sprawling, packed warehouse.
