Tilya-Kori Madrasa

The Tilya-Kori Madrasa dominates the northern side of the Registan square with a facade covered in intricate, deep blue tilework and gold leaf gilding. Completed in sixteen sixty, it served as both a school for religious studies and the primary congregational mosque for Samarkand. Builders added the structure decades after the other two surrounding madrasas, finally closing the square. A merchant named Yalangtush Biy ordered its construction, hoping to provide students a place to live, learn, and pray in a single complex.
