Aksaray Mausoleum

The Aksaray Mausoleum is the brick structure standing apart from the others, recognizable by the remnants of its high portal arch and the deep blue tile patterns still clinging to its surface. Timur the Lame built this for his eldest son, Jahangir, who died in a riding accident at twenty-two. Craftsmen from conquered lands were brought here to assemble the intricate mosaics. When the prince was buried, the local people believed the site possessed a unique sanctity, and they often came to leave offerings.
