Bukharan Jewish Cemetery

The Bukharan Jewish Cemetery in Samarkand occupies a steep, windswept hillside covered in rows of white marble and concrete headstones. It serves the ancient Bukharan Jewish community, whose presence in the region dates back over two thousand years. Instead of traditional flat markers, many graves feature elaborate stone portraits etched directly into the marble, showing the deceased in their daily clothes. One grave belongs to a local musician holding his instrument, while another shows a woman wearing her traditional festive headscarf.
