The Tuman-Aka Mosque wears a facade of weathered, turquoise-tiled mosaics that feel softer and more intimate than the towering monuments nearby. Built in the fourteen thirties, it was commissioned by Tuman-Aka, one of the wives of Shah Rukh, the son of Tamerlane. She intended it as a neighborhood gathering place for daily prayers. Tuman-Aka spent her wealth patronizing the arts and architecture in Samarkand, and this small mosque remains a tangible piece of her influence on the city's urban landscape.
