The Ulugh Beg Madrasah frames the Registan with a massive, arched portal covered in intricate geometric tilework. Built in the fourteen twenties by the astronomer-king Ulugh Beg, the structure functioned as a center for the study of mathematics and theology. Students lived in small rooms lining the inner courtyard, while the king himself frequently joined debates on planetary movement. When the architect completed the dome, the blue mosaic patterns mirrored the night sky as Ulugh Beg mapped it from his nearby observatory.
