Harbour View Hotel, The Rocks

landmark

The Harbour View Hotel holds a distinct position in The Rocks, identifiable by its curved, corner-facing facade of dark, weathered brickwork that follows the tight bend of the street. Built in nineteen twenty-two, this pub replaced earlier worker cottages to serve the growing population of dockhands and tradesmen nearby. During the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, laborers and engineers crowded its bar, while the project’s chief engineer, John Bradfield, occasionally dropped in to check on the progress of his steel giant.
