Sydney Eye Hospital

other

The sandstone walls of the Sydney Eye Hospital hold the oldest continuous medical site in Australia. Dr. James Bowman opened the original colonial facility on this Macquarie Street plot in eighteen twenty-two to serve the convict population. By the eighteen nineties, the focus shifted toward ophthalmology. Inside the front gates, the colonial architecture hides a history of pioneering eye surgery that defined the hospital's reputation. Surgeons here performed the first corneal graft in the country during the nineteen thirties, changing lives in the process.
